Alfred is the server at the center of my homelab. This site, the tools I build and the businesses they run all live on it: one Proxmox box, about forty containers and VMs, and a GPU that does the AI work without a cloud bill.
The Machine
-
Intel Core i9-12900K (undervolted) · 96 GB RAM
Sixteen undervolted cores shared by everything below. Plenty of memory means every service gets its own container instead of fighting over one OS.
-
NVIDIA RTX 3090 · 24 GB
The AI engine. It runs local language and image models and backs the coding agents that help build all of this.
-
2 TB mirrored NVMe · ZFS
Fast storage for the containers, with backups going to the TrueNAS.
-
Proxmox VE 9
Every service is its own LXC container or VM: snapshot it, clone it, test on the copy, roll it back. Cloudflare sits in front, Nginx Proxy Manager routes the traffic, and Let's Encrypt keeps it all on HTTPS.
Around Alfred
-
TrueNAS · Beelink ME Mini
An Intel N150 with 12 GB of RAM and four 4 TB NVMe SSDs (two Samsung 990 Pro, two WD Black SN850X) in two mirrored pools, Alfred and Wayne. Silent, low-power, all-flash storage and the home for Alfred's backups.
-
pfSense · Protectli VP2420
Bare metal on a fanless Intel Celeron J6412 with four Intel 2.5 GbE ports and open-source Dasharo coreboot firmware. Firewall, VLANs and VPN for everything on the network.
-
PiKVM
Keyboard, video and mouse over the network: full control of the hardware from a browser, down to the BIOS, even when nothing has booted.
-
Raspberry Pi 5 · 8 GB
DNS for the whole homelab: Pi-hole blocks ads and trackers on every device, backed by its own recursive resolver instead of a third-party DNS provider.
What It Runs
-
Business
ERP, helpdesk and CRM, plus the apps I build on top of them.
-
Mail, files and notes
My own mail server, cloud files and office docs, photos, notes and a wiki.
-
Code and automation
Self-hosted git with its own CI, workflow automation and push alerts.
-
AI
Open WebUI over local models, and AI coding agents in their own containers that can build, test and deploy on Alfred.
-
Home and media
Home automation, media streaming and the network controller.
-
Websites
WordPress sites for clients and for me, including this one.
Why Self-Host
- Own the data, own the uptime
- One box I understand beats a stack of subscriptions
- A GPU at home makes every AI experiment free to try
- Snapshots make it safe to break things
